Design Week 01 — Guided Exploration in Minecraft
A collaborative level built in Minecraft: Education Edition, designed to guide players through a curated exploration path using poetry, lighting cues, and environmental storytelling.
The goal for this week was to create an environment in Minecraft: Education Edition that intentionally guided players through a structured exploration experience. Our team integrated poetry, environmental storytelling, and level design principles to craft a journey that felt intuitive and emotionally grounded.
Key Lessons
- Collaboration & Alignment. We aligned our ideas into a shared vision through discussion and compromise.
- Environmental Storytelling. Lighting, structure, and pacing guided players without explicit instructions.
- Iterative Playtesting. Small adjustments to lighting and layout dramatically improved clarity.
Process
- Poetry Integration. Each poem shaped the emotional tone of its area.
- Sketching. I explored layout ideas through quick 2D sketches.
- Greyboxing. I focused on the enclosure area, shaping pacing and spatial framing.
- Lighting & Cues. We used elevation, contrast, and lighting to guide players subtly.

Takeaway
Designing for guided exploration requires balancing subtlety and clarity. Through iteration, we learned how lighting, pacing, and spatial framing can gently lead players without breaking immersion. Working in Minecraft: Education Edition reinforced how powerful simple tools can be when paired with strong design intent.
